<바람둥이를 벤치마킹하라>

 
얼마 전 한 모임에 참가해 재미있는 이야기를 들었다. 이른바 ‘희대의 제비’를 소재로 한 우스개 유머였다. 수십 명의 여인을 농락한 ‘제비’가 어느 날 경찰서에 잡혀왔다. 그 사람은 일반적 기대와는 달리 용모도, 조건도 별 볼일 없었다.

심지어는 평균에 못 미치는 수준이라서 보통 남자들에게 위안을 줄 정도였다. 의구심이 생긴 수사관이 물어보았다.

“도대체 당신은 무슨 수로 여자들을 유혹한 거요?”
자타공인 소문난 제비의 대답은 의외로 간단했다.

“여자들의 말을 끝까지 들어주고 적절히 동의해 준 것이지요. 상대방 여자의 말이 정 재미없을 때는 맘속으로 애국가를 부르면서까지 참았습니다. 심한 경우, 4절까지 부른 적도 있었지요.”

왕년의 미남스타 게리 쿠퍼는 영화로뿐 아니라 실제 삶에서도 여자들에게 최고의 인기를 누렸다. 영화를 찍는 중에 늘 히로인과 염문이 끊이지 않았다.

‘미국의 연인’이란 닉네임에는 이처럼 만인의 연인이 됐던 바람기 실상도 작용하고 있는 셈이다. 그 비밀은 무엇이었을까. 그를 가까이서 관찰했던 감독 빌리 와일더는 게리 쿠퍼에 대한 부러움을 가득 담아 한 인터뷰에서 이렇게 털어놓았다고 한다.

“그가 세상의 모든 여자에게 인기를 누린 것은 딱히 멋진 대화 솜씨를 가져서가 아닙니다. 다만 그는 들을 줄 알았습니다.

계속 떠들어대는 여자에게서 시선을 떼지 않고, 때로 다음의 세 마디 가운데 한 마디를 곁들이는 것입니다. ‘설마’, ‘정말로’, ‘그건 처음 듣는 말인데’, 이런 식으로 여자에게 속내를 털어놓게 만드는 사이에 여자들은 자연히 그에게 몸을 던지게 되는 것이지요.”

게리 쿠퍼의 인기비결은 ‘정말’, ‘설마’, ‘처음 듣는 말인데’ 등 딱 세 마디였다. 바로 상대의 말에 경청하며 추임새를 넣어주어 신나게 이야기하도록 만든 것이 게리 쿠퍼의 유혹의 기술이었던 셈이다.

진정성 면에서는 재고할 필요가 있지만 접근, 개척하는 점에서 바람둥이들의 테크닉은 확실히 아트이고 벤치마킹의 대상이다.

그 바람둥이들의 ‘유혹의 기술’ 핵심은 단언하건대 경청이다. 그들은 상대의 말에 귀기울여 상대의 고민, 관심을 파악해 그것에 세심하게 대응한다. 경청은 이성의 마음뿐 아니라 동성 부하직원, 상사 모두의 마음을 사로잡는 강력한 병기이다.

우리의 착각 중 하나는 달변가가 상대에게 깊은 인상을 심어줄 것이라고 지레 짐작하는 것이다. 하지만 진짜 인기 있는 사람은 상대방, 화자에게 상당한 관심을 기울이는 경청자이다.

그런 점에서 경청이야말로 소극적 행위가 아니라 의사소통의 가장 적극적 행위이다. 경청은 인간관계 경영의 기본이다. 얼마나 중요한 것이었으면 삼성그룹에서 고 이병철 삼성그룹 명예회장이 이건희 전 회장에게, 그리고 이재용 전무에게 대대로 물려주는 휘호로 ‘경청’을 선택했겠는가.

사실 경청이 어려운 것은 인간의 타고난 뇌구조와도 상관성이 있다. 그런 만큼 경청은 자연스럽게 타고나는 것이 아니고 학습이 필요하다. 경청은 상대와의 관계를 증진시켜 주는 효과만점의 마법 지팡이지만 당장엔 노동이고 봉사인 ‘고통’의 통과의례를 거쳐야 그것을 획득할 수 있다.

보통 사람은 1분에 120단어를 말하고 600단어를 듣는다고 한다. 산술적으로 볼 때, 상대방이 120단어를 말하고 남는 여유에 딴 생각을 하게 되는 것이다.

이 짧은 순간에 상대방의 말뿐 아니라 감정, 태도 등에 집중하는 자만이 경청의 마법을 직접 체험해 볼 수 있다. 고통은 쓰지만 열매는 달다.
